The Girls from Ames

This was an interesting book. Sharon read it and liked it so I decided to read it. Notice: my comments could be a potential spoiler. At first I didn't appreciate it. Their high school experiences were so different than mine. There were some things that seemed familar but I agreed with some of the critics of their youth...they were a clique and seemed mean to other girls. But then about 2/3 of the way through the book, tragedy struck and then I started to see how much their lives were like mine. I started to relate to them. The loss of a friend; the death of a parent; illness.

The unique aspect of this book was the fact that they have been friends for 40 years. The author emphasized how a lifetime friendship like theirs is different because they have so much history; they know each other before husbands, kids, careers, etc. I have a few friends like that. It is unique. At the end I was even more grateful for all of my friends; my lifelongs and the ones I've come to know along the way. I wondered if I would be here on earth when I am old; I wondered if my friends will be here too. Sharon talks about us being old together. I wonder if we will be.

  1. I got to page 107 and couldn't make myself read any farther. I guess I'm just not in the mood for this particular style. I'm glad to hear you finished it and enjoyed it. Maybe I'll try again after the holidays.

  2. Enjoyed is not quite accurate. It turned at page 165. Had the chapter on the First Child not been there, I think I would have quit; before that I was about to. Kelly bugs me. I wish they had spent more time on the others and less on her.

  3. Okay, this book was ON my "to read" list, then OFF my "to read" list. Guess I'll put it back ON and give it a try ;-)

  4. Jury is out. I didn't dislike it but I didn't like it either. However, I cried and it did cause me to think of my own life and my own friends. For that, I am glad that I read it.
