Free Museum Day

Not every year but many, we have taken the boys to Free Museum Day in Sacramento. It is a great event. We've been to the Railroad, Discovery, Towe Ford, Crocker Art, Sacramento Zoo, Fairytale Town, Governer's Mansion, California Museum - some more than once.

This year the boys still wanted to go which at 18 and 20 years of age I was pretty happy about. Grandma likes to come and luckily she reminded us of when it was coming up so we didn't miss it.

The 2010 wish list for the trip:
Grandma wanted to go to the California Museum to see the Japanese Relocation and Reparation exhibit. I wanted to see the Leland Stanford Mansion which was recently restored and is now used by the State for official events particularly hosting international dignitaries. Greg wanted to see the Crocker and Barrett wanted to go to the zoo. Unfortunately, Owen couldn't come with us because he was sick.

We started the day entering downtown and making a quick stop at Osaka-ya for some mochi for my mom. I've never stopped but pass it whenever I drive to work. Friends at work tell me they have lots of fun mochi, but I am not much of a fan so I haven't ever stopped. I know my mom loves mochi so it was great to stop. After our quick stop we started our museum tour at the California. The exhibit of the Japanese internment was quick extensive. I was surprised and it was much more emotional than I expected it to be. When I saw this picture, I started to cry.

There was a replica of a partial barrack. When we were in Los Angeles we went to see the Japanese American Museum and there was a full barrack that was actually from Heart Mountain Relocation Camp in Wyoming. That is were my mom's family were relocated to.
There was a picture of some kids ice skating in Wyoming. My mom told me that they did that. They ordered skates from the Sears and Robuck or the Montgomery Ward's catalog. The camp people cleared a spot, put a brim around an area and filled it with water for a rink.

After the California Museum we walked two blocks to the Stanford Mansion. I work across the street and I always wanted to see the inside. After that we were on our way to the Crocker when a wrong turn got us on the freeway, so since we were on our way, we decided to go to th e zoo. Grandma and I didn't really want to walk the zoo so we dropped the boys off and we drove over to find Oto's Japanese Food Market. Mom got an idea of what she wanted to buy and we grabbed some sushi just when the boys called. We picked them up and returned to Oto's. Going to Oto's was a real treat because my mom has never been to their new location. Oto's also makes bento boxes to go and so the boys grabbed lunch. It was yummy and a lot less then going to a Japanese restaurant.

After Oto's we tried to go back to the Crocker but the line was still long and we didn't think we would get through it before they closed so we headed for IKEA instead. For us, IKEA is almost as fun as Disneyland! After walking through, we were ready for dinner...at IKEA. We came out of there with full tummies, a folding chair and food....cookies and cinnamon rolls.
Last stop: Winco Foods. Since I spent my only home work day out having fun, I had to cram in at least a couple of chores. We grocery shopped on the way up the hill. Came home, put the food away and went to bed. The end of a perfect day!
