This weekend we went down to LA to attend a memorial service for my aunt and uncle on the Japanese side, but I took the opportunity to set up a meeting with my cousin on my dad's side. I had told my cousin Richard when I was on the phone that I was anxious for him to see my boys, particularly to see if Greg looked like my dad. Richard is the only one I know who ever knew my dad as a boy and young man. Richard is 2 1/2 years younger than my dad so they were more like brothers and he was more like my uncle. My dad lived with them from the time he was 10 years old until he left for the military. Richard brought pictures of my dad and he told stories. It was very fun. Here are some pictures of my dad in the army.

This eyebrow thing is something Greg and I both share.

My mom says she can see my dad in me in the expressions of my eyes. I don't know maybe there is some similarity here.

For some reason this is the face I remember of my dad. This look seemed to carry over the years so later pictures of him also have this expression.

Goofing off here I think his body style, mouth and chin look like Greg. I have always been bothered by how some things I do with my chin make it look like it takes up half my face....now I know where that comes from :)

It was fun to watch my mom talk about my dad. She hasn't in a long time and a lot of the stories are not happy ones, but when Richard and my mom talked, she lit up like a light bulb as she talked about the fun times, his sense of humor, his good heart and particularly when she remembered that he was "exceptionally handsome."
