Barrett's email - March 5th, 2012

This week I asked him a lot of questions so the beginning is responding to those...then he just got in this routine to respond with 'concerning...' so I didn't have a question about Dina or the new translation of the triple combination...both very cool by the way.  Also, I asked him to concentrate on sending a picture for his mission plaque so there were six of the same...here is one:

Concerning money: ...There's just too much cool stuff....yes, I will probably have to start sending stuff home, I have at least one box (the same size, but heavier) almost ready), and mom, come on, there's some way cool stuff here, holy cow, you gotta see it.

Did the ties already make it home? These are ties that I bought when I...didn't follow Sister S's advice who told me to wait to buy any souvenirs, and I've been carrying them around. I don't really have a plan for them. But just look at them, they're pretty darn cool. right?

Concerning yogurt: nope, that is not the stuff. This stuff is in a bigger bottle, and comes in different flavors. It's called "chooda"

Concerning elections: We were told to take our tags of saturday night at 5:00, and we didn't wear them on Sunday (exept in church). My area is outside the center, so we didn't see much action, but there is a school near our house they were using as a voting center.

Concerning Dina: Dina is a fantastic babushka that we've been visiting with. She is a great lady, and she wanted us to tell our parents that if you ever get tired of me, or don't want me any more, it's okay because I have a Russian mom, and she'll take care of us. haha. She's great.

Concerning the google translated letter: That was very cool. I didn't know a couple words, but it's been a long time since the MTC. Google Translate is a lot funnier now, it makes some mistakes because it translates mostly word for word, and it can be kind of funny.

Concerning the new translation of the Triple Combination in Russian: IT'S FINALLY HERE!!! Holy Cow! I was in the MTC and hearing promises that the new translation would be done it October. October came and they promised november, november to december, etc, etc. And then, this sunday, the bishop gets up to make an announcement, and in his hands are 3 books: a new Book of Mormon, a hardcover triple, and a beautiful soft leather cover triple with gold edged pages. Oh man, how cool is that? At long last. They've been using the same translation for more than 20 years, and it's full of mistakes and funny wording. Did I tell you about when the Stake President read it and said it was like a whole new book, "Now the church is true" he said. haha

B: How many Zones are there in your Mission?

O: 2, the North Zone and the South Zone

B: How many Districts in each Zone?

O: the North Zone has 3 (2 in Moscow and one in a city called Zelenograd), and the South Zone has 4

B: Do the you have "Assistants to the President" that are Elders?

O: yep

B: Do the members feed you often or do you have to make your own meals?

O: Certain members feed us often. In my first area we went to this one family every monday night for FHE. And in my second area Sister Elena (the gypsy lady) fed us all the time. Most people serve a little snack or treat with tea whenever we go over if they don't prepare a meal.

B: How do you do your laundry? Are there any laundromats like we have?

O: Every apartment has a tiny (and I really mean tiny) washing machine in it, and we dry all our clothes on an Ikea drying rack. I haven't seen any laundromats, but they do have drycleaners all over the place.

The work is moving forward here in Moscow. Transfers are coming up this week, and it's gonna be a big one. I think every one is going to be there. President's getting things ready for July 1st. Exciting times.

Well, have a great week. I can't tell you how much I love you. Talk to you soon

Elder Hamp
