The Road to Heart Mountain - Day Three

This day we went through West Yellowstone, through the Park and on to Cody, WY.

Playmill Theater was owned by my drama teacher at Ricks, Lynn Benson back in the day. Also back in the day, Bruce, from Placerville, performed there for several years. I told Sis. Bredeson that his picture was up on this poster showing the history of the Playmill.

We arrived in Cody and went to the lodge. What a place. Perfect. We settled in and then Bob and Karen arrived and then Gwyne, Alan and Amanda. It is so fun to be together.

Bob brought the coolest stuff to donate to the Heart Mountain Foundation...a newspaper from Heart Mountain Relocation Camp, several books related to the internment. We went through all of stuff and mom shared stories.

I realized that I got almost everything wrong. I thought she was 17 when she went to camp, she was 16. I thought she left camp after 1 year, but she left after nine months after she found out that she had enough credits to graduate from high school. I thought she went to Chicago but found out that she went to Denver first. She was sponsored by a family there. She told me that the Quakers did a lot to help the internees during this time.

She was in Denver for six months and then because my Uncle Bob was in Chicago, she came to Chicago. Bob was supposed to meet her at the train station, but she waited and she never found him. She said because of the war there were a lot of people so they missed each other. She took a taxi to the address she had for her brother. It was wrong and there was just an empty lot. The taxi driver said, well this was the address you said, so he left her there. She went to the closest hotel she could see. She explained what happened and the nice older man at the desk and his assistant gave her a room for the night. The assistant took her to the room and told her to lock the door and not open it for anyone or anything until he came to her door the next morning. She was so nervous, she didn't change her clothes and she waited until he came the next morning.
When he came to her door, they put her in a taxi to go to the Quaker office. At that point, he told her that she had spent the night at Al Capone's brothel.
From the Quaker office, she found her brother who was very upset with her for leaving the station.
The Quakers helped her find an apartment that she shared with another Japanese girl.
That is all I remember from that story....

Bob took us all to dinner. It was great!
